Introduction

A Career in Technical Security

An electronic Security system is a mission critical service installed in both domestic and commercial buildings to not only protect property but to safeguard lives as well.

It is an industry manned by dedicated individuals and companies who are of the highest calibre and work diligently to provide a service that should not be compromised.

Being part of that industry requires an individual to undertake his/her responsibility with a high degree of professionalism.

Technical Security encompasses such areas as

  1. Intruder Alarm Systems
  2. CCTV Systems
  3. Access Control Systems
  4. Fire Alarm Systems
  5. Perimeter Protection
  6. Remote monitoring of Mission Critical Infrastructure
  7. Panic Attack Systems

So where do you start?

Here in Australia we have a very strong regulatory environment that mandates WHO can install maintain and service electronic security equipment.

In order to install cabling and equipment for an electronic security system including CCTV you require two separate registrations / licences. Acquiring both of these is a mandatory Requirement before a technician can install any electronic security equipment.

Firstly the technician requires a cabling Registration as a minimum. This is a national requirement but the qualification is a national qualification accepted in all states and territories.

There are primarily two types of cabling registration

1. Restricted Registration

2. Open Registration

In today's working environment where telecommunications infrastructure is used to integrate services an Open Registration is highly recommended.

Information on the Open Registration can be found here.

The Open Registration is considered to be Basic Training that allows a technician after successful completion to move into many different areas of the electronic security industry.

Secondly the technician requires an Alarm Installers License. The requirements for this licence changes from state to state. In Western Australia this license can be obtained from

Police Licensing Services
297 Hay Street, East Perth 6004

WA Police websiteInformation re installers license requirements in WA can be found at the website of the Western Australia Police Service.

In order to obtain this license a technician is required to do the following:

  1. Obtain a letter of intent from a licensed Security Agent outlining their intent to employ you as a Security Installer.

  2. Complete a pre-licence test if you wish to install or maintain electronic alarm systems, install or maintain security doors, or install or maintain CCTV.

The alarm test is based upon Australian Standard AS2201.1-5 (Intruder Alarm Systems), basic electronic skills including circuit calculations and component values. The applicant must achieve a minimum of 80% to pass this test.

The security door test is based on the Australian Standard 2804 (Fitting). The applicant must achieve a minimum of 60% to pass this test.

In order to facilitate the above requirements for the alarm installers course Integracom have two training courses to train students on how to install a security alarm system and how to install CCTV equipment.

  1. Alarm installation Course

  2. CCTV Installation Course

These courses are nationally accredited courses and are mandated under the Australian Quality Training Framework.

On successful completion of both of these courses the student will be competent to sit the relevant examinations at the Police Licensing Centre in Hay Street.

For information on courses outside of Western Australia please contact us by submitting a course enquiry from the top of this page.

Some additional courses that a student will find beneficial are

1. Structured Cabling Course

Allowing a technician to understand the basic fundamentals of data transmission on a structured cabling system including installation practices and testing.

2. Fibre Optic Course

Allowing a technician to understand the basic fundamentals of data transmission on a Fibre Optic cabling system including installation practices and testing.

3. Working with IP Networks

This Course takes a Technician or Electrician through the technical requirements that are needed to install IP enabled devices onto an IP Network or ADSL Circuit. The content was developed to help the technician to understand the concept of Network Terminology.

FAQs

Q1. Do I need to do an electrical apprentiship before I can become a Installation Technician?

A1. No. The area of Electronic Security installation and maintenance is now recognised as a separate entity and industry having its own Industry Representation and Traineeships.

Q2. What are my chances of gaining employment in this industry?

A2. The concept and utilisation of electronic security deterrents is now so mission critical both in the residential sector and especially the commercial sector, that technicians with passion and ability are always in short supply and highly regarded.

Q3. How long will it take me to become a qualified technician with a reasonable amount of experience?

A3. The average time allowing for training in the field is between two and three years depending on the level of exposure to new technologies.

Q4. Are there any pre requisites or age limitations that need to be addressed?

A4. There are no pre requisites but it is advantageous to have a basic knowledge of electrical theory and Operating Hand Tools. Integracom can organise for a potential student to do a short course on basic electrical principals and basic electronics as well as operating hand tools safely before starting out with an Open Cabling Registration.

There are no age limitations students can be as young as Year 11 and 12 students with more mature students only requiring a lust for knowledge and a passion for an exciting career change.

If this is a career path you are interested in either starting out on or changing your career to become a Security Technician, please feel free to call into the centre where we can discuss the best options and study framework for you.

All courses are nationally accredited and form part of the CPP 07 Training package which can lead a technician to acquire a Certificate III in Technical security.
